In “The Matrix,” Carrie-Anne Moss leapt over buildings and ducked bullets – all thewhile sporting shiny black catsuits. In real life, Moss’ style is leaps and bounds from such slinky attire.
“I’m more Bohemian and casual,” says the dark-haired beauty. “I love to wear dresses, especially dresses over pants. And I love khaki pants and T-shirts.”
The 33-year-old Vancouver native follows her heart as far as fashion goes in her new movie “Chocolat,” donning girlie 1950s period clothing for her role as Caroline Clairmont. She co-stars with Johnny Depp and Juliette Binoche.
Before “The Matrix,” Moss was a model, then a TV actress, appearing in “Dark Justice” and the nighttime soap opera “Models Inc.” She auditioned seven times to win the role of Trinity in “The Matrix,” and has been working nonstop ever since.
Recently, the 5-foot-8 bombshell appeared in “Red Planet” and “The Crew,” and is set to appear in “The Memento,” with Guy Pearce, as well as in “The Matrix 2” and “The Matrix 3,” which are currently in production.
Moss lives in Los Angeles with her three dogs and her husband, actor Steven Roy.
Q: “Chocolat” is about a woman who opens a confectionery shop in a small town in the French countryside. Did you gain any weight from all the chocolate on the set?
A: I didn’t. The chocolate and cheese in Europe are different. I actually lost weight. There was nothing to do, so I walked a lot with the most beautiful cows. I was forced to face solitude. I couldn’t eat meat for three months after.
Q: What was it like shooting the action scenes in “The Matrix” wearing that supertight catsuit?
A: The suit actually has a lot of stretch in it. [The costumes] were all designed so that I can move in them. They are actually comfortable, except for being sweaty and hot.
Q: If you could download any program into your brain, what would it be?
A: Perfect communication.
Q: What are you doing for the holidays?
A: Staying home.
Q: What do you think you would be doing if you hadn’t become an actress?
A: Kindergarten teacher. I love kids. Or a dog watcher.
Q: What do you do to relax?
A: Pilates, yoga, meditation.
Q: Do you follow a special diet?
A: Sometimes I do. It depends on where I’m at. The less that I diet, the better my body seems to be. I’m trying to eat healthy, cut back on bread and pasta and stuff. But I haven’t figured out the mystery of all that.
Q: What are some of your favorite things?
A: Baths, sleeping, walking my dog, singing karaoke, meditating, hanging out with family and friends, great food, my mom, kids and babies.
Q: Favorite food?
A: Indian – chicken tikka masala, rice, eggplant and nan.
Q: Do you have any favorite stores?
A: While I was shooting “Chocolat,” I found a thrift store in England. I enjoy Fred Segal. And little stores in my neighborhood like Polka Dots and Moon Beams.
Q: Favorite designers?
A: It’s hard for me to spend money like that on clothes. Christina Perron is a good friend of mine, and Robert Cavalli. I see other actresses in other clothes like Calvin Klein, and they look great, but I’ve never worn them.
Q: Whose style do you most admire?
A: One of my best friends is Maria Bello, and I think she has incredible style. She can put a look together like no one I know. She’s pregnant, and her look is so her and so gorgeous.
Q: What would you never wear?
A: Fur.
Q: What do you wear when relaxing?
A: Flannel PJs and velvet pants. I’m a big believer in whatever makes you feel good, so I like to mix flannel and velvet together. It’s functional.
