She was in a relationship with Ellen DeGeneres and the events following their breakup became subjects of widespread media interest. She was married to Coleman “Coley” Laffoon for eight years since they got married on September 1, 2001, and parted ways in 2009 after Coley filed for divorce on February 2, 2007, after five and a half years of marriage.

She later started a relationship with James Tupper. They got separated in 2018.
