Her sister was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s the following year. Her time was consumed with caring for her family and patients, and her health worsened.
Bowen was diagnosed with anxiety and sadness after her mother died, and her sister was placed in a nursing facility. She was exhausted from the losses in her family and her new role as director of a pediatric ICU.
Four days into the program, she quit work and accepted a nurse position with less stress, which caused a “big shift” in her mental state.
Bowen, now 54, attributes her success to changing her perspective to put her health first. She had attempted to lose weight without success, and even surgery in 1997 had failed.
Bowen can now do things she never imagined possible, such as taking a long stroll on her preferred beach, two hours away from her home in Fresno, California.
